Rhêmes is a most attractive valley with much natural beauty unspoilt by tourism. Going up from Villeneuve through Introd (medieval castle belonging to Sarriod of Introd), you travel along a route similar to the adjacent Valsavarenche. At first, the valley is narrow and skirts a gorge cut out by the Dora at Rhêmes.
Overhead, you catch a glimpse of the pointed bell-tower of Rhêmes-Saint-Georges, one of the two communes in the valley where summer holidaymakers are always welcome. The valley widens into green meadows, fir woods and cool streams with the ever-present Granta Parey providing a fine background for many pretty little villages with outstanding examples of traditional architecture.
Rhêmes-Notre-Dame lies in the middle of this stretch of flat ground and offers many spectacular views besides being an ideal spot for a quiet holiday of leisurely walks and outings. One of the most popular is to Lake Pelaud, which is hidden amidst a coniferous forest, or to the Benevolo mountain hut. The Rhêmes Valley has become a popular rendezvous for cross-country skiers over the past few years.
