The Champorcher Valley is popular not only because it is near the Po Valley, but also because of its good hotel accommodation, wild, beautiful scenery and vast forests offering a variety of outings.
Along the winding road from Hône, you get a beautiful view of the medieval village of Bard and its fortress. The road runs through chestnut woods, the small commune of Pontboset and pretty villages with slate-tiled roofs. The valley widens at Champorcher, built round the medieval tower of an ancient castle and the parish church, where you can see the ruins of an ancient castle chapel and precious carved and gilded altars.
The main town in the valley is Château, which is an ideal departure point for long walks in the woods to admire the waterfalls or walking along the mule track to Dondena and Lake Miserin, the largest lake in the valley and one of the most picturesque. A shrine to Notre-Dame-de-la-Neige, whose feast day is on August 5th, is built on the western shore of the lake with a chalet for pilgrims nearby. A footpath links Champorcher to the Cogne Valley over the pass at the Finestra di Champorcher.
